THE LORD'S BASEBALL GAME
Freddy and the Lord stood by to observe a baseball game. The Lord's team was playing Satan's team.

The Lord's team was at bat, the score was tied zero to zero, and it was the bottom of the 9th inning with two outs. They continued to watch as a batter stepped up to the plate whose name was Love.

Love swung at the first pitch and hit a single, because Love never fails. The next batter was named Faith, who also got a single because Faith works with Love. The next batter up was named Godly wisdom. Satan wound up and threw the first pitch. Godly Wisdom looked it over and let it pass: Ball one. Three more pitches and Godly Wisdom walked, because Godly Wisdom never swings at what Satan throws.

The bases were now loaded. The Lord hen brought in His star player. Up to the plate stepped Grace.

Freddy said, "He sure doesn't look like much!" Satan's whole team relaxed when they saw Grace. Thinking he had won the game, Satan wound up and fired his first pitch. To the shock of everyone, Grace hit the ball harder than anyone had ever seen.

But Satan was not worried; his center fielder let very few get by. He went up for the ball, but it went right through his glove, hit him on the head and sent him crashing on the ground; then it continued over the fence for a home run!

The Lord's team won!

The Lord then asked Freddy if he knew why Love, Faith, and Godly Wisdom could get on base but could not win the game. Freddy answered that he did not know why.

The Lord explained, "If your love, faith, and wisdom had won the game you would think you had done it by yourself. Love, Faith and Wisdom will get you on base but only My Grace | can get you home. Psalm 84:11, "For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace ' and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly."
The Lemon Bet
The local bar was so sure that its bartender was the strongest man around that they offered a standing $1000 bet. The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and hand the lemon to a patron. Anyone who could squeeze one more drop of juice out would win the money. Many people had tried over time (weight-lifters, truck drivers, etc.) but nobody could do it.

One day this scrawny little man came into the bar, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit, and said in a tiny squeaky voice, I'd like to try the bet. After the laughter had died down, the bartender said OK, grabbed a lemon, and squeezed away. Then he handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the little man. But the crowd's laughter turned to total silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and six drops fell into the glass. As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the $1000, and asked the little man, "What do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, a weight-lifter, or what?" The man replied "I work for the IRS."

While working on this newsletter article the wonderful aroma of cheeseburger soup fills the air along with the laughter of those working in the kitchen. Yes, this is the last Lenten Soup, Song and Service. We've had a marvelous time together and many, many participated in the services and others served as mentors and cooks. All of us enjoyed the food and fellowship.

Holy Week is near, and we're looking to the end of our Lenten Journey to the cross.

It's the cross that counts! In April a Bible Study will be offered for about six months on Mondays at 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. We will be studying the texts for the following Sunday morning. We will read the texts before we come together. Then we'll talk about any questions you might have. I think it will be fun - and it won't cost anything but your time. A sign-up sheet will be sent around on Sunday, April 4. If you can't come to all of the sessions, that's okay. Here's the schedule:

Monday, April 4: Psalm 116;Acts 2:14a, 36-41;
1 Peter 1:17-23; Luke 24:13-35.
Monday, April 11: Psalm 23; Acts 2:42-47;
1 Peter 2:19-25; John 10:1-10.
Monday April 18: Psalm 31:1-5,15-16; Acts 7:55-60;
1 Peter 2:2-10, John 14:1-14.
Monday April 25: Psalm 66:7-18; Acts 17:22-31;
1 Peter 3:13-22; John 14:15-21

On Sunday, April 24, six of our young men and women will confirmed. Please join us for this wonderful celebration. Holy Communion will be served. Please remember these young people in your prayers. Faith Lutheran Church Swanburg is indeed blessed with wonderful kids; they have been faithful and enthusiastic students. I also want to thank Bill for helping me teach on Wednesday nights. He always finds a way to make us laugh! Thanks also to all of you who provided supper for us.

On April 28, a junior at Northland/Remer High School will attend "Preview Day" at Luther Seminary. We are both looking forward to this event. We will stay at the Days Inn on Wednesday night. Then Thursday morning we will go to Luther Seminary where President Teide will greet us. Professors Jim Nestigan and Frethein will speak to the students. Then we will choose seminary classes to visit. After that a panel of seminary students will answer questions and talk about their experience. Lunch will be furnished and then we'll head home.

From the Pequot PATRIOTS Newsletter
The eighth grade students at Pequot Lakes Middle School took a field trip to Duluth. They went to the Omnimax Theater and the aquarium on Thursday, December 16, 2004. The reason we went to Duluth is because we were doing a unit on the Vikings in our classes. In Mrs. Moehling's geography class we learned many things about the history of the Vikings and where they came from. We also played a traditional Viking gamed called Hnefatafl (Kings Table). In Mrs. Dotty's English class we researched many aspects of Viking life such as traditional foods, games, and other customs. The Omnimax was showing a video on how the Vikings lived, which tied in great with our curriculum. We then went to the aquarium where we did a scavenger hung and had some neat "hands-on" experiences that will later tie in with our science curriculum. We asked some people what they thought about the trip: one 8th grader said, "I thought it was fun, new and very different." another 8th grader said, "The aquarium was inspirational, the Omnimax was unsurpassed, and McDonald's was highly educational!" Geography teacher, Mrs. Moehling said, "It was a great opportunity to learn about the Viking influence in the world and the Great Lakes Waterways - all in the same day!"

Malachi 3:3 says: "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at the next Bible Study.

That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver.

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to bum away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot then she thought again about the verse that says: "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."

She asked the silversmith if it were true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire.

If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?" He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy — when I see my image in it."

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has His eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.

Pass this on to everyone you know. Right now, this very moment, someone needs to know that God is watching over them. And, whatever they're going through, they'll be a better person in the end.

Respite Plus: Another choice for Family Caregivers
The Lutheran Social Service Caregiver support and Respite Program is launching a project that will provide additional choices for family caregivers in rural Minnesota.

The new project is called Respite Plus and will involve recruitment of certified nursing assistants to provide in-home respite for caregivers who want help with personal care for their loved one.

94% of Minnesotans prefer in-home services to nursing home care," explained Virginia Hanson, program manager for Lutheran Social Service. "This new project will help us meet consumer preferences and bring added value to the people that we serve."

The Caregiver support and Respite Program has been in operation since 1992 and is funded under contract with the Minnesota Board on Aging and the Area Agency on Aging as a part of the Older American's Act. Services offered include non-medical, in-home respite care, monthly caregiver discussion groups, individual and family coaching, and public education on caregiver issues.

Costs associated with program development were afforded through a grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation. Both the commitment from the Foundation to strengthening the non-profit sector and the LSS commitment to reducing caregiver burden in rural Minnesota greatly facilitated the development of Respite Plus as another choice for family caregivers. Friendship
One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books.

I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd." I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.

He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives.

" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.

As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends. He said yes. We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday! " He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke.

I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship. Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.

Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.

Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. "Thanks," he said. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.

Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach—but mostly your friends... I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story." I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.

He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.

Not until that moment did I realize it's depth. Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life. For better or for worse.

God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way. Look for God in others.

America was born a Christian nation. America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness, which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scriptures. Part of the destiny of Americans lies in their daily perusal of this great book of revelations. That if they would see America free and pure they will make then-own spirits free and pure by this baptism of the Holy Spirit. --Woodrow Wilson
Hunger News: A+ Rating
Newsweek magazine recently ran a rating on organizations involved in Tsunami Relief to assist donors in deciding which agencies were efficient in getting the help to those in need. Lutheran World Relief, the overseas arm of the ELCA Hunger appeal received an A+ rating. "Great track record," the article commented. LWR promises to give 100% of tsunami relief to help the victims. Our ELCA World Hunger Appeal dollars are channeled to Lutheran World Relief.
Stumpy and his wife Martha went to the State Fair every year. Every year Stumpy would say, "Martha, I'd like to ride in that there airplane." And every year Martha would say, "I know, Stumpy, but that airplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars."

This one-year Stumpy and Martha went to the fair and Stumpy said, "Martha, I'm 71 years old. If I don't ride that airplane this year, I may never get another chance. " Martha replied, "Stumpy, that there airplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars."

The pilot overheard them and said, "Folks, I'll make you a deal. I'll take you both up for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say one word, I won't charge you, but if you say one word it's ten dollars."

Stumpy and Martha agreed and up they go. The pilot does all kinds of twists and turns, rolls and dives, but not a word is heard. He does all his tricks over a gain, but still not a word. They land and the pilot turns to Stumpy, "By golly, I did everything I could think of to get you to yell out, but you didn't." Stumpy replied, "Well, I was going to say something when Martha fell out, but ten dollars is ten dollars."
